The Traffic Misdemeanor Court has sentenced a citizen to one month in prison and suspended his driver’s license for the same period after he was found guilty of parking in a space designated for persons with disabilities. The verdict was issued despite it being the individual’s first offense, reflecting the court’s strict stance on protecting the rights of individuals with special needs.
The court based its ruling on Law No. 8 of 2010 on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, since the violation occurred before the new traffic law came into effect on April 22. Under Article 63 of this law, anyone who unlawfully uses a parking spot reserved for disabled persons can face up to one month in jail, a fine of up to KD 100, or both.
Although the amended Traffic Law now imposes significantly harsher penalties including imprisonment from one to three years and fines ranging from KD 600 to KD 1,000 under Article 33 bis the earlier law was applicable in this case due to the timing of the offense.
Authorities emphasized that the ruling sends a clear message that misuse of facilities intended for persons with disabilities will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
