Kuwait Launches Crackdown on Fake Degrees – What Expats Need to Know About Certificate Verification

Kuwait is tightening its grip on academic credential verification, and both citizens and expatriates working in the country should take note. A newly established government committee is now actively reviewing the educational qualifications of employees across all sectors.

New Verification Committee in Action

The Committee for Examining Academic Certificates of Employees in Government Agencies and the Private Sector was formed late last year with a clear mandate: verify the authenticity of academic credentials held by workers throughout Kuwait.

This week, the committee is hosting a guidance forum to explain its procedures to officials from ministries, government departments, and public institutions.

Who Is Affected?

This initiative applies to:

  • Kuwaiti citizens employed in government and private sectors
  • Expatriate workers across all industries
  • Public sector employees (ministries, government bodies, state-owned companies)
  • Private sector employees

In short, if you work in Kuwait and have submitted educational certificates as part of your employment, your credentials may be subject to review.

What Is Being Verified?

The committee is focusing on:

  • Original academic certificates (degrees, diplomas)
  • Equivalency certificates issued by the Ministry of Higher Education
  • Accuracy of educational records in employee files

Action Required for Employees

Several government entities have already begun requesting employees to:

  1. Update their educational qualification records
  2. Verify and correct any discrepancies in their files
  3. Ensure all certificates are properly authenticated

Why This Matters for Expats

For expatriates, having properly attested and verified academic certificates has always been important for visa and work permit purposes. This new initiative adds another layer of scrutiny.

If you are an expat working in Kuwait, consider taking these steps:

  • Review your submitted documents with your employer
  • Ensure your certificates are properly attested from your home country
  • Obtain equivalency certification from Kuwaits Ministry of Higher Education if required
  • Keep copies of all verification documents for your records

The Bigger Picture

This verification drive is part of Kuwaits broader efforts to ensure data integrity and combat credential fraud. With fake degrees becoming a global concern, Kuwait is joining other Gulf nations in implementing stricter verification processes.

Employees with legitimate qualifications have nothing to worry about – but this is a good reminder to ensure all your paperwork is in order.
