Australian Ambassador Warns Expats in Kuwait to Prioritize Safety Amid Security Concerns
In a recorded message to the Australian community in Kuwait, Australian Ambassador Melissa Kelly described the past few days as “extremely difficult” and warned that challenges are likely to continue in the coming days. The ambassador urged Australian citizens to remain sheltered in their residences, follow instructions issued by Kuwaiti authorities, and prioritize their personal safety.
Ambassador Kelly explained that the Australian Embassy is currently closed, but her team is working remotely from various locations across Kuwait to provide consular support and respond to phone calls and emails. She stressed that anyone requiring consular assistance should contact the designated embassy email or use the 24-hour emergency hotline in Australia, which forwards messages directly to the embassy.
The ambassador also encouraged Australians to follow the embassy’s social media accounts and register with the “Smart Traveler” service to receive updates, affirming that the embassy will continue to provide information as it becomes available.
The Australian envoy noted that Kuwait has always been a place where the Australian community feels safe, but acknowledged that the current situation is “concerning,” particularly for families with young children trying to explain the events to them. She urged members of the community to support one another and maintain regular contact with family and friends, especially those living alone.
