Thirteen Individuals Detained in Kuwait for Spreading Misinformation on Social Media

The Public Prosecution in Kuwait has launched investigations into 13 individuals accused of broadcasting malicious news, statements, and rumors through digital platforms. The allegations include inciting sectarian strife, encouraging acts of violence, weakening the home front, and undermining social cohesion.

Authorities have noted that the circulated content had the potential to cause public panic and compromise the defense preparations of the armed forces, particularly during the current exceptional circumstances affecting the country. Investigations indicate that these acts threatened national security, jeopardized unity, and disrupted public order.

The Attorney General has directly overseen the investigations, issuing directives to form multiple teams to question the accused and complete investigation procedures. The 13 defendants have been detained pending trial and will be referred to the criminal court once investigations are finalized.

The Public Prosecution emphasized that protecting national unity and maintaining public peace are key legal objectives. It reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law, preserving public order, and safeguarding the security and stability of society.

Citizens and residents were urged to exercise caution and responsibility when using information technology and social media, avoid spreading rumors or misleading content, and refrain from actions that could incite panic or compromise national defense.
