India Suspends TV News Ratings Amid Geopolitical Tensions

India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has temporarily halted the publication of Television Rating Points (TRPs) for all TV news channels for a period of “four weeks or until further notice”. The decision follows concerns that some broadcasters were airing “speculative and exaggerated coverage” about the ongoing conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States, which authorities warned could cause unnecessary panic among viewers.

The ministry invoked “Clause 24.2 of the 2014 Policy Guidelines for Television Rating Agencies”, which allows the government to issue directions to rating agencies in matters concerning the public interest. Government officials said the measure is intended to “discourage sensationalism driven by the race for ratings” and encourage responsible reporting during an international crisis.

The move has sparked debate within the media industry and political circles. Some observers have welcomed the step as a way to curb exaggerated reporting, while others have expressed concerns about potential implications for media independence.

The latest directive comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to dominate global news coverage, prompting intense reporting by television networks across India.
